We can take complicated information and turn it into simple and attractive animations. For example, a financial website can use animated charts and graphs to make complex market data understandable.

Since people are naturally drawn to visual content, adding animation to pictures or shapes makes them even more attention-grabbing. When things move around on a page it naturally catches your eye. So animation gives you a much better chance of a user staying on your website to explore it further.

1. Hero animation

A hero animation is basically a moving version of the hero image you see at the top of a webpage, right below the header. Using animated hero images is a popular choice because the hero image is often the first thing visitors see when they arrive at a website.

Alithea Capital advises a group of companies that together make up a private family office and the animated building blocks are a good way to present this concept immediately as the user enters the website.

2. Loading animation

Another simple way to use animation is to give feedback to users. One of the biggest turn offs a visitor can experience when viewing a website is how long the site takes to load. Long delays in loading content can make users think something is wrong, even if it’s not. That is why it’s a good idea to use animation to show that something is happening on the website, letting the user know that data is being loaded.

Another example could be to add a submit button on a form. Instead of users clicking and waiting for a page refresh, make it smoother. Show a loading state to indicate the site is working, then visually signal success before refreshing the page.

On the HealthAxon website, we indicate that a page is loading with an animation of a man on a bicycle. It’s a fun way to introduce the site and it also informs website visitors that the page is loading, as a blank screen could give the impression that nothing is happening, causing users to potentially leave the site.

3. Scroll-on animation

Another way to make navigation better with animation is by using scroll-on effects. When you scroll down the page, elements can be animated to highlight important information or provide visual cues. These animations are made to add movement and interaction, boosting user engagement and providing a more dynamic browsing experience. This provides you with a more intuitive navigation experience.

We used this technique on Health Axon’s new website. When you scroll down on the HealthAxon website, you can see certain components animated throughout the website for example with moving clouds and shooting stars. By bringing these elements to life, we create an immersive browsing experience that not only makes the website more interesting but also guides users through the content.

4. Hover animation

You can improve website navigation with animation by adding hover effects. When a user hovers over a navigation item, this can trigger an animation to provide additional information or highlight the item. This helps you know where you are on the website and what you can do next.

5. Accent animation

Accent animations are a specific type of animation used to draw attention to important items on a website. Designers use them to highlight key information, buttons or menus making them stand out from the rest of the content. By adding movement to these items, accent animations can make the user experience (UX) more engaging and intuitive. It also makes websites easier to read and navigate by directing user’s attention to the most important parts of the page, like key words or phrases, which helps everything look tidy and organised.

We used accent animation on the Pythia website to highlight what industry they operate in: predicting sports event outcomes globally. By adding movement to these elements accent animations can increase the user experience (UX), making it more engaging and intuitive.

6. Interactive animation

Unlike traditional animation interactive animation involves viewer interaction, such as hovering, clicking or scrolling on a website. This type of animation allows viewers to interact and engage with your design on several different levels. These animations can range from simple objects or images, like a button changing colour when hovered over, to complex simulations or games. It is often used for advertising, educational purposes and entertainment.

Take a look at the Socci Capital website. It is a dark web design with minimal content, so we decided to use an interactive visual component on the splash page that moves with your mouse. This interactive element transforms a static and forgettable page into something that captures the imagination of users and holds their attention.

If you’re considering incorporating animation into your web design, it is important to take the time to consider when an animation is and isn’t appropriate. Animations should have a clear purpose. They shouldn’t be added just for the sake of having animation. When an animation lacks a practical function, it can come across as awkward or irritating. But when animation is done right, it can take a web design to the next level, turning it from something forgettable into something memorable and special. As web design keeps progressing, we can look forward to even more creative and captivating ways of using animation and interaction in the future.

The power behind Photoshop’s Generative Fill comes from Adobe Firefly, which consists of machine-learning models trained on a vast collection of the company‘s own professional-grade, licensed, high-resolution images to generate and fill in missing pixels. In simpler words, it can automatically generate new pixels using existing photos and seamlessly merge them into your images, making the changes appear smooth and natural. It works by using smart technology to analyse images and make changes based on what users want. Because it uses images from the Adobe Stock images library, you can use Generative Fill without concerns about accidentally including copyrighted material in your photos.

How to access Photoshop’s Generative Fill feature

If the Generative Fill button is not visible in your Photoshop installation, you must switch to the beta branch. Adobe claims that Firefly Generative Fill will be a default option in Photoshop by the end of the year. An active Adobe Creative Cloud subscription is also necessary to access this feature.

To install the Photoshop Beta on your computer, follow these steps:

  • To access it, open the Creative Cloud app on your Windows or MacOS computer and navigate to the sidebar.
  • In the left column menu, look for Beta apps and click on it.
  • Under the Desktop Apps category, simply click on the Install button next to Photoshop (Beta).

1. Dreamy illustrations, minimalism and abstract drawings

In our  logo design trends post we touched on the popularity of minimalism and white space. From landing pages to beautiful social media marketing – brands are opting for a ‘less is more’ approach in much of their design process.

Single line drawn imagery is being replaced with dream-like illustrations with splashes of colour, cementing an individualistic approach to brand identity. Many websites are incorporating characterisation, story-telling and pastel-loving designs which transport users to a homepage that feels more like they’re reading through a children’s story than navigating through a website. It’s exciting that an emphasis of narrative is on the rise.

2. Genuine, subdued & natural stock imagery

A blogger’s best friend, stock imagery has been used by thousands of web developers and graphic designers alike. But with libraries full of photography and footage, it can be difficult to really stand out the masses.

But hey, it’s 2020. And the graphic design trend sweeping into the mainstream is the latest stylistic approach towards stock imagery. Trends in social media have enabled stock host sites to display images that feel more natural, feeling far more genuine than ever before.

Our prediction is that with the rise of photo editing tools, VSCO and other photography apps will breathe a new life into stock imagery that in the past, have felt ‘samey’ and cliché.

3. Colour gradient & monochrome

Colour gradients have been huge this year. The dual purpose of versatility and style allows this design trend to succeed in promoting powerful brand statements. pMajor brands such as Apple, Spotify and Instagram have been utilising the colour gradient aesthetic all of 2019. And we think it’s here to stay. Why? Well,  it’s a strong and rather economical approach towards advertising your products with very little complication at all.

We’ve enjoyed experimenting with colour gradients in the past too. Our branding work on Space is a prime example!

4. The ‘Perfectly imperfect’ graphic design trend

In the famous words of Salvador Dali, ‘Have no fear of perfection – you’ll never reach it’. In 2020, graphic designers are clearly accepting this with open arms! The rise of ‘selfie culture’, has paved the way for something new.

A graphic design trend which actually favours imperfection is a refreshing ode to ‘randomness’ in all of its charm. Designers are ditching neatly cropped and filtered images and celebrating graphic design which leans towards the eccentric.

Forget everything you learnt in design school – brutalism may be here for the long-haul!

5. Rebellious

The huge surge in environmental campaigns and ethically conscious brands has propelled ‘DIY activism’ to become one of the latest graphic design trends.

Extinction Rebellion’s unmistakable logo has successfully spread to those far removed from the movement, who don’t perhaps really know what it’s all about. Something they’re excelling in, is presenting the power of a recognisable brand.

At the moment we’re loving many of the UK-based brands promoting their cause with beautiful design concepts. ‘Haeckels’ is a brand based in Margate. Not only is their shop a minimalist designer’s paradise, but the cause itself promotes ethical sustainability.

‘Gen Alpha’

Gen Alpha. Otherwise known as those born after 2010, are arguably a graphic designer’s most challenging audience yet. Growing up expecting the unexpected, designers are adopting elements in their work aimed to ‘surprise’, ‘immerse’ and create a sense of interactivity and fluidity within their design concepts. Furthermore, entertaining and retaining a younger audience is key to successful graphic design this year.

We feel this graphic design trend will encourage an explosion of creativity and unique attention-to-detail.

In the hall of fame of cartoon logo designs, stand figures like Mr Pringle and the Starbucks Lady, which have been around since the late 1960s to early 1970s. With both designs having faced a sequence of re-designs, cartoon logos have been able to capture audiences on a global scale becoming recognisable in most households.
